Denis is Artistic Director of Ouroboros Theatre Company. He produced and appeared as Hugh O’Neill in the company's touring production of Brian Friel’s Making History which toured to 35 venues in Ireland and nine venues in Europe following Hugh O'Neill's path on the Flight of the Earls.

Previously for Ouroboros he has played Muller/Mulcahy in The Death of Harry Leon, Odysseus in Myrmidons, Salieri in Amadeus, the title role in Macbeth, Jupiter/Tereus in Tales from Ovid, Ulysses in Troilus and Cressida, Hugh in Mutabiltie and the title role in Richard III for which he was presented with the 2002 Irish Times/ESB Theatre Award for Best Actor.

 His work for the Abbey and Peacock theatres includes: Hugh in the Abbey's recent production of Translations and previously he has appeared in Christ Deliver Us, The Recruiting Officer, A Cry From Heaven, Homelands, The Comedy of Errors, The Crucible, April Bright, The Colleen Bawn, The Freedom of the City, Judas of the Gallarus, The Wild Duck and in the trilogy Riders to The Sea/Purgatory/Dandy Dolls.

He has appeared as Finbar in The Weir at the Gate Theatre and as Butler in Wallenstein at the Chichester Festival.

For Druid he recently completed an international tour (Galway Arts Festival, Dublin Theatre Festival, Edinburgh Festival, St. Anne's Warehouse Brooklyn, New York, The Hampstead Theatre London and the Studio Theatre in Washington DC), playing Dunne in Enda Walsh's Penelope following his portrayal of Dinny in Walsh's Walworth Farce which also toured internationally.

He has also played Old Mahon in The Playboy of the Western World for Druid in Perth Australia and appeared as The Irishman in Tom Murphy's The Gigli Concert for which he was presented with The Irish Times award for Best Actor in 2010.

His television work includes: Showbands 1 and 11, Single Handed, Hide and Seek, The Clinic, Bachelor’s Walk, On Home Ground, Fair City (RTE), The Return (Granada), Casualty, Custer’s Last Stand-Up, Ballykissangel and Rebel Heart (BBC), Yesterday’s Children (CBS), Trí Sceal, Boghaisini, An Turas (TG4). He played Vincent in the hit show The Running Mate directed by Declan Recks for Treasure Films/TG4.

Film includes The Wind That Shakes The Barley (dir, Ken Loach), Tiger's Tale (dir John Boorman), Alexander (dir, Oliver Stone), I Went Down (dir Paddy Breatnach), Boy Eats Girl (dir. Stephen Bradley), Intermission (dir. john crowley), Michael Collins (dir Neil Jordan) and in Mark O’Halloran’s award-winning film Garage directed by Lenny Abrahamson.

Denis appeared in the central role as Nearchus in Alexander written and directed by Oliver Stone and starring Colin Farrell.

He also appeared as Rendell in series I and II of Showbands directed by Ian Fitzgibbon forRTE/Parallel Films.  He appeared as Inspector O’Kane in season three of Single Handed (RTE/Touchpaper/ITV).
